The Most Veg-Friendly Cities in the World

by Joanna Eng

I’m currently reading Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer and I’m learning a lot. This statistic alone (from the UN) makes me think I should focus more on vegetarian- and vegan-friendly travel on my blog: “Animal agriculture makes a 40% greater contribution to global warming than all transportation in the world combined; it is the number one cause of climate change.” (p. 42)

So, to start, I was curious about what the most veg-friendly destinations would be. I looked at lists from Happy Cow and Matador, and these are the cities that made it onto both lists: Singapore, Chiang Mai, Taipei, London, San Francisco, Portland, and New York.

Yum. This definitely intensifies my desire to go to Singapore and Taiwan.

What do you think? What are the best places in the world to eat vegetarian or vegan?

  1. That certainly is a dramatic statistic. As a meat eater, I must say it’s pretty persuasive. I’m trying to think of the most veg-friendly place I’ve visited, and all I can think of are places that are distinctly NOT veg-friendly like Argentina and Iceland. I was in Istanbul recently with vegetarian friends who managed to do just fine. We skipped the doner, and went straight for all of the amazing eggplant dishes. A lot of the street food was meat-free, too: corn on the cob, roasted chestnuts, and fresh pomegranate juice. Yum!

  2. Safran Foer’s Eating Animals put me off chicken and turkey altogether. I cross the street now when I see a KFC. I can agree with your list of veggiecities. It’s very easy to find vegetarian food in London because there are lots of Indian restaurants. In Singapore you can find ANYTHING you want. When I was in Turkey two weeks ago, I found it very easy to eat vegetarian.

  3. India is the heaven for veggies.I can assure you you will find good veg restaurant in every street of all the cities in India. However it is difficult for vegans as majority of indian recipies contain dairy products
